Lightning protection adequacy audit

Lightning Protection System is designed to protect a structure from damage due to lightning strikes by intercepting such strikes and safely passing their extreme high currents to ground. Since it is not possible to predict the lightning strikes, it is advisable to take adequate protection against lightning strikes.

Need for a LPS Adequacy Audit

Whether lightning protection system is provided for all the structures in the facility to mitigate the risk from Radiated and Conducted Surges.

If provided, to which standard they conform to?

First step towards this is to conduct a LPS adequacy audit and collect all relevant data for each and every structure / building in the facility.

National Building Code 2016 and Central Electricity Authority - 2016 Draft specifies Lightning Protection System as per IS/IEC 62305 Standard.

Lightning Protection System components tend to lose their effectiveness over the years because of any one of or the combination of:

  • Corrosion
  • Weather related damage
  • Mechanical damage
  • Damage from lightning strokes.

Modifications and changes to the structures can result in the existing lightning protection system inadequate. Hence it is imperative to maintain mechanical & electrical characteristics of the Lightning Protection and associated Earthing system in order to ensure protection against lightning.  lightning protection system should be well maintained throughout the entire life time and they should conform to the relevant standards in order to ensure adequate protection.
