Power Quality



Power quality is commonly defined as the power grid’s ability to supply a clean and stable power flow as a constantly available power source. The power flow should have a pure sinusoidal wave form and it should remain within specified voltage and frequency tolerances. No real-life power source is ideal.


In today’s electrical networks, deviations from these ideal conditions are frequent due to increasing non-linear and other loads disturbing the grid. Power generation is also becoming more complex with new players and technologies entering the business, which used to be a fairly stable operating environment. All this adds new challenges to power grid operators.


The consequences of insufficient power quality can inflict serious losses on business and economy. In the worst-case scenario, it may pose a threat to human life in mission critical applications and highly sensitive environments, such as hospitals.

The Power Quality Analysis report shall include

  • RMS Variation Analysis which will include tabulations of voltage sags, swells and magnitude -duration scatter plots based on CBEMA, ITIC curves.
  • Steady State Analysis with trend graphs of RMS voltages, RMS Currents, negative and zero sequence unbalances, real and reactive power.
  • Harmonic distortion levels and individual harmonic components as a function of system characteristics (resonance conditions) and load characteristics
  • Power factor correction evaluation to identify proper operation of capacitor banks, switching concerns, resonance concerns and optimizing performance to achieve near unity power factor.
  • Short circuit protection evaluation to evaluate proper operation of protective devises based on short circuit current characteristics, time current curves etc.
  • Event List based on Power Quality Triggers (RMS Trigger, Transient Trigger, Wave shape Trigger) with recorded Wave Form of pre-trigger during faults and post-trigger cycle.
  • Equipment performance as a function of power quality levels (equipment sensitivity reports.
